Camping Wilderness Skills
Privacy Policy
Operated by Blackwater Outdoor Journeys LC, a Domestic Limited Liability Company
Effective Date: May 8, 2026
Last Updated: May 8, 2026
1. Introduction
This Privacy Policy ("Policy") describes the practices of Blackwater Outdoor Journeys LC, a Domestic Limited Liability Company ("Company," "we," "us," or "our"), with respect to the collection, use, disclosure, retention, and protection of personal information in connection with the Camping Wilderness Skills service, including any application, website, platform, or related offering operated under the Camping Wilderness Skills brand (collectively, the "Service").
This Policy applies to information we collect from or about users of the Service (each, a "User," "you," or "your"). By accessing or using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read this Policy and understand the practices described herein. If you do not agree with the practices described in this Policy, you should not use the Service.
The Service is location-aware and may enable you to share your position with others, including in the context of outdoor trips, but it is not a life-safety, rescue, or emergency-response system. You are responsible for understanding the limitations of the Service and the information you share.
This Policy is incorporated by reference into our Terms of Service. Capitalized terms not defined in this Policy have the meanings ascribed to them in the Terms of Service.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Information You Provide to Us
We collect the following categories of information directly from Users:
Account information. When you register for an account, we collect your email address, a password (stored only as a cryptographic hash, never in plaintext), your country of residence, your preferred system of measurement (metric or imperial), and your preferred trip types.
Profile information. When you complete onboarding or update your profile, we may collect your home region, your camping or paddling style preferences, your stated experience level, your timezone, and similar self-reported attributes.
Trip planning information. When you create or modify a trip plan, we collect the planned route, location names, dates of travel, planned duration, group composition (number of persons in your party), gear lists, designated emergency contacts (including the names, phone numbers, and email addresses you provide for those contacts), and any notes you choose to associate with the trip.
Contributor content. If you contribute information about rivers, trails, trailheads, landings, hazards, gauges, conditions, or related geographic and environmental data, we collect that contribution along with metadata identifying you as the contributor.
Communications with us. If you contact us through the Service, by email, or through any other channel, we retain the content of those communications along with associated metadata.
Payment information. If you subscribe to a paid tier of the Service, you provide payment information directly to our payment processor, Stripe, Inc. ("Stripe"). We do not receive or store full payment card numbers; we receive only a tokenized identifier from Stripe along with limited metadata (subscription tier, status, and the last four digits of the payment instrument, where Stripe makes that available).
Legal acceptance records. When you accept our Terms of Service, this Privacy Policy, our Acceptable Use Policy, or our Waiver of Liability, we record the fact, date, and time of your acceptance, the version of the document accepted, and the internet protocol ("IP") address from which acceptance was submitted.
2.2 Information We Collect Automatically
When you use the Service, we automatically collect the following categories of information:
Device and usage information. We collect information about the device you use to access the Service, including device type, operating system, browser type and version, screen dimensions, language and locale settings, IP address, and approximate location derived from IP address.
Service interaction information. We collect information about how you interact with the Service, including the features you use, the pages or screens you access, the actions you take, the timestamps of those actions, and the request identifiers our system associates with each request.
Diagnostic and error information. When errors or failures occur, we collect diagnostic information including error type, stack trace identifiers, and the request identifier associated with the error. Diagnostic information is used to investigate and remediate operational issues.
Service worker cache state. The Service uses a browser-based service worker to enable offline functionality. The service worker maintains a local cache of certain Service assets on your device. Cache state is local to your device and is not transmitted to us in routine operation.
2.3 Location Information
The Service is intentionally location-aware. With your authorization (which you may grant, withhold, or revoke through your device's operating-system controls), we collect location information from the following sources:
(a) Foreground location. When you actively use the Service, we may collect your current GPS coordinates to enable map display, navigation, and trip-status features.
(b) Active-trip location. During a trip you have explicitly designated as "active" within the Service, we may collect a sequence of GPS coordinates over time, sampled at intervals controlled by motion-aware polling logic intended to balance battery consumption against tracking fidelity.
(c) Trip-completion location. When you mark a trip as completed or use the "I'm back safe" feature, we record the location associated with that event.
(d) Live-share location. If you use the location-sharing feature to allow designated contacts to view your location during a trip, we collect and transmit your location updates to those contacts.
We do not collect location information when the Service is not running or when location authorization has not been granted. We do not collect location information for advertising or marketing purposes. The Service is not a life-safety system; location data may be inaccurate or delayed, and you must treat this as informational only.
2.4 Information We Receive from Third Parties
We may receive information about you from third parties in the following limited circumstances:
(a) Stripe, in connection with subscription transactions, sends us tokenized payment status and metadata.
(b) Email and SMS providers may send us delivery status information about messages we have asked them to deliver on your behalf or on the Service's behalf.
(c) Authentication errors, fraud signals, and abuse signals may be received from our infrastructure provider.
We do not purchase information about Users from third-party data brokers.
2.5 SMS Opt-In Data and Consent
When you opt in to receive SMS messages from the Service, we collect and process the phone number you provide, the date and time of your opt-in, the version of the disclosures presented to you at the time of opt-in, the IP address from which the opt-in was submitted, and the record of your continuing consent or any subsequent revocation. This information is used solely to operate the SMS messaging program, to deliver the messages you have requested, to honor opt-out requests, and to maintain auditable records of consent for compliance and service administration.
All SMS opt-in data and consent are excluded from any sharing, sale, transfer, or disclosure to third parties or affiliates for marketing, promotional, or lead-generation purposes. This information will not be shared with any third parties except as necessary to provide the SMS service requested, to comply with applicable law, or to operate the messaging infrastructure used to deliver those messages.
All the above categories exclude text messaging originator opt-in data and consent; this information will not be shared with any third parties.
3. How We Use Your Information
We use the information described above for the following purposes:
(a) To create and authenticate your account and to manage your access to the Service;
(b) To provide the features of the Service, including trip planning, navigation, location sharing, emergency alerts, educational content delivery, AI Coach interactions, and contributor pipelines;
(c) To process and manage subscription payments, refunds, and tier transitions;
(d) To communicate with you about your account, your subscriptions, your trip plans, technical notices, security alerts, and operational announcements;
(e) To respond to your inquiries and provide customer support;
(f) To investigate and prevent fraud, abuse, security incidents, and violations of our Terms of Service or Acceptable Use Policy;
(g) To debug, troubleshoot, and improve the operation of the Service;
(h) To comply with legal obligations, including responding to lawful requests from government authorities;
(i) To enforce our Terms of Service, Acceptable Use Policy, Waiver of Liability, and other applicable agreements;
(j) To protect the rights, property, and safety of Blackwater Outdoor Journeys LC, our Users, and the public; and
(k) To produce aggregated and de-identified statistics about Service usage, including trip-planning behavior and safety-feature usage patterns, that do not identify individual Users. We do not use your information to train artificial intelligence models for any purpose other than the operation of features within the Service that you have actively chosen to use.
